Christian Wicca
by Neo on Jun.06, 2009, under Wicca
Is there such a thing as Christian Wicca? Well, Taking into consideration how most Wiccans view deity and depending on your definition of Christian Wicca is I would say yes. No, your eyes are not deceiving you. I said it or in this case wrote it.
Let’s look at how many Wiccans view deity and the mythologies around it. Most of us believe that all gods are part of a greater god and all goddesses are part of a greater goddess and they are part of everything including us. We do not adhere to the religion of the deities we worship. Most of us do not take the mythologies surrounding them as literal but we do use it to give us an idea of the personality and attributes of those deities. The same can be done with the Christian pantheon. Even though I am not a Christian Wiccan I see the bible as a book of mythology like all the others. I do not consider it to be literal anymore than the Greek mythologies surrounding my patrons. Therefore, other than having to figure out how to get the personalities to work, I do not see any issue with Christian Wiccans as long as they adhere to the 13 Principles of Wiccan belief.
So, I just put my opinion forward. What do you all think?

A Blessing or a Curse?
by Neo on May.30, 2009, under Religion and Spirituality, Wicca
I have on occasion taken some time to think about whether tv shows like Charmed or movies like Harry Potter hurt or help the pagan community, Wicca in particular. I’ve gone back and forth in my mind whether they were a blessing to the community or a detriment. Eventually I came to the conclusion that they were both. In other words a blessing and a curse. However, I believe they are a net gain for our community.
Now it is true that many of these shows portray Wiccans and other magic users as these super beings with extraordinary powers but we should note that they usually portray them in a positive light. When we look at shows like Charmed, Practical Magic and Harry Potter we see characters that at their core are strong, positive humans that have the same emotions, goals and vulnerabilities as anyone else. The viewer connects with them and creates in their mind a positive association with Wicca and magic in general. It is also free publicity.
All the glitz and special effects however gives a false impression of what magic really is to those outside of paganism and the occult. It becomes a harmless, fanciful fairytale in their minds. While this does make us appear silly to them when we discuss it; they no longer fear it as they did in the past. This makes it easier for us to educate them on the reality of magic and the occult. It is very hard to get through to someone who is operating from a position of fear.
So what do you all think? Are they a blessing or a curse?
